3D Printing: By Payton Arganbright and Erica Schmitz
Catalyst Video Reflection:
This was a fun process that I think showed my creativity. We chose to do a video on the 3D Printer. The first thing that we did was create a google docs and both of us started the research process. We did research on what it was and how it worked. We did the research separately but then met up to create the script and decide what else will be in the video. Creating the script was fun, but that was probably the most difficult part because figuring out what to say can sometimes be a challenge.
Once we finished the script we went ahead and recorded the video where we were actually in it with the 3D printer. After that we decided that it would be cool to actually use the 3D printer so that you could all see how it actually works rather than just hearing it. We had the creative idea to actually record the printer while in its process. I think this is one of the best and most interesting parts of the video because many people have not seen a 3D printer while it's printing (including me) which was SO cool.
After recording all of the video we decided to take pictures of every step that it took to start the 3D printing process so that it was very clear what you needed to click and do. (There was no manual in the Catalyst so we had to ask someone at the help desk to show us how it worked) It was also helpful to do a voice over so that you could see and hear the steps at the same time. It was actually much easier than I thought. You pretty much just turn it on, chose what you want to print, and bingo: it prints it for you. It did take 25 minutes to print a tiny chain link so it is very time consuming depending on what you print. I think that it would be so cool to print something bigger but it could take hours to do so.
Once everything was recorded we put the video together and it did so quite nicely. In the end we did a little voice over of what we would do, individually, to incorporate the 3D printer into a classroom lesson. Using iMovie was a very great experience. I used to make so many videos on iMovie with my friends when I was younger so I was pretty experienced on how to use it. It is a little more difficult to use it on the iPad though rather than on a laptop because there are not as many buttons making it a little more difficult to find certain things.
Overall this was a very fun project and I had a good partner that communicated with me very well and sometimes that is not always the case when it comes to group projects. I really liked getting to experience the 3D printing process and finding out that it is something that is available for me to use. There are many ways that you could use these in the classroom, especially in elementary where the kids would be very amazed by it. This project was really fun and I'd definitely do it again.
